By S&S Northern

“Thank you S & S Northern for supporting Inspire Youth Zone”

S&S Northern donate a monthly gift to a local
Children’s Charity Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone.

Lockdown has been a very strange and scary time for many of the Inspire young members.
Schools have been closed, they could no longer visit their friends and family units reacted in
many different ways. It was evident that the young people would need Inspire more than ever,
so whilst many charities were forced to close, the Inspire Youth Zone team was quick to adapt to
ensure thousands of local children’s and young people could still access the support they need.

‘Since lockdown, Inspire has adapted our delivery to provide much needed support young people and the wider community’.’Our young people have needed us more than ever and thanks to your regular gift from S&S Northern we’re able to continue our vital, sometimes life changing youth work for thousands of local young people.’

‘Through the use of Facebook Live, Insta TV and a series of gameshows, daily challenges and much more we’ve delivered over 217 hours of pre-recorded content and many more through live session.’

Inspire have done the upmost for the community by hosting crisis helplines, safeguarding calls, welfare visits plus social distancing 1:1 mentoring and emergency community responses by making 546 calls and 864+ bags of personalized shopping delivered.

If your business would like to become a part of the Inspire Supporters Programme by donating a monthly gift to the children’s charity, running charity events or even volunteering at the Youth Zone you can get in touch by emailing Karen.Hunter@inspireyouthzone.org and arrange your visit.

Portland Visits Chorley

By S&S Northern

We had the pleasure of inviting our American reps based out of Portland, Oregon to the UK. Iain CEO and Luke are both representatives of our American Gas Safety product range. With continued success over the past 5 years we invited them over for a bit of English culture. It all started with a Head Office tour in Chorley and then on to Windermere for a spot of Afternoon Tea.

We concluded the evening with a meal and plenty of drinks at Tattu in Manchester. In the morning they were put on a train down to London to enjoy some sightseeing.

Luckily for us the climate in Oregon is very similar to the North of England, so the traditional British weather didn’t faze them in the slightest. On return to the US they advised “First class trip! Which we will remember forever! Thank you from all of us for making it so special”.

S&S Northern Sponsor a local Chorley Children’s Charity

By S&S Northern

S&S Northern is proud to offer a monthly gift of £400 to Chorley Children’s Charity Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone.

Pictured above is three brothers of the family business, Dave McMahon, Lee Dempsey & Craig Dempsey.

The brand-new charity appeal launched by Inspire will see businesses able to donate monthly gifts of any amount to support the charity and Chorley’s next generation.

Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone’s first year of operation saw 1-in-3 young people in Chorley sign up as members as they racked up over 75,000 visits.

S&S Northern’s ongoing monthly gift of £400 will help the Youth Zone in its bid to cement itself in the heart of the Chorley community and support the charity as it pushes into its second year.

Karen Hunter, Head of Fundraising at Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone said, “We’d like to extend our deepest thanks to S&S Northern for their generous monthly donation, for as long as our doors are open!

“Monthly gifts are incredibly important to our children’s charity – they help us in forward planning for engaging youth provision for all of our members and they massively help in adding stability to the charity for years to come.

“We’re delighted to welcome S&S Northern as our first local business to join this new supporter programme and are hopeful our new campaign will inspire many other local businesses to join us in supporting Chorley’s Next Generation.”

Brothers Craig Dempsey, Lee Dempsey & Dave McMahon are Directors at S&S Northern and visited the Youth Zone to see the incredible work undertaken by the charity throughout the Summer Holidays.

Holiday Club at Inspire runs while the schools are closed and provides young people with something to do, somewhere to go and someone to talk to through the holiday periods at a margin of the price charged by other childcare provisions.

The children’s charity has served over 190 free hot meals to prevent holiday hunger and welcomed 7,208 visits through their doors this summer alone.

Craig, Lee and Dave took part in a number of activities alongside young people attending Summer Holiday Club at Inspire including music, indoor climbing and most notably reliving their own youth on the underground football pitch.

Craig Dempsey, Director at S&S Northern said “I wish something like this existed when I was a child because the range of activities on offer – climbing, boxing, dance, football – it’s incredible. The work they’re doing here at Inspire is fantastic and as a business passionate about our local community we decided that we wanted to give back. By providing a monthly donation to Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone, S&S Northern can help to support the young people in our area that may well one day work for our company with the help and support of the youth workers at the children’s charity.”

If your business would like to become a part of the Inspire Supporters Programme by donating a monthly gift to the children’s charity, running charity events or even volunteering at the Youth Zone you can get in touch by emailing Karen.Hunter@inspireyouthzone.org and arrange your visit.

S&S Northern Sponsor a local LW Storehouse Food Bank

By S&S Northern

S&S Northern have donated £2000 towards an extension to the LW Storehouse, Chorley Food Bank

Pictured above is the Managing Directors of S&S Northern,  Sue & Steve McMahon.
LW Storehouse is a charity organisation run by volunteers from LivingWaters Church in Chorley and are currently in plans to extend their property. We recognized this amazing charity is helping hundreds of people around the Chorley area who are living in poverty by providing food and hampers, not only around Christmas time but throughout the year and wanted to do our best to assist them in this wonderful work.

LW Storehouse has recognised the upsetting fact that over 13 million people in the UK are currently living in poverty, 3 million of which are children. They are working to alleviate poverty and feed people in crisis in the Chorley area. There are many families in our local area that are living in hidden hunger. Many struggle to find money to put food on the table and thousands simply go without. A current project they are working on at the moment is putting together bags of food & hampers for 40+ students in the local schools along with a cafe for the local residents.

LW Storehouse urgently requires food donations to continue assisting people living in poverty. Please like LW Storehouse’s Facebook Page to help raise awareness of the amazing work they do.

British Standards

Why are British Standards so Important?

By S&S Northern

British Standards affect all of us, every day of our lives. Chances are any product or service we are using; there will be a standard relating to it. Working to recognised standards makes things better, safer and means they are of a higher quality and even easier to use.

What is BS6173:2009?

Here at S&S Northern, all of our kitchen interlock systems comply with BS6173:2009. BS6173 was originally introduced in 2001 and then revised in 2009 and makes reference to gas installations within commercial kitchens. It states gas should not be available within the commercial kitchen if the ventilation is not in operation, and this should be controlled by a gas interlock system.

A gas interlock system is required to be fitted within every new commercial kitchen, which has been built since 2001 or has had any major refurbishment since the release of BS6173:2001.

How do gas interlock systems work?

There are a couple of different ways in which a gas interlock system can check that the ventilation is in operation. Firstly, air pressure differential switches can be fitted in the ducting and will physically check for airflow before allowing the gas solenoid valve to open. Alternatively, a more modern method is to use current monitors, which will check for a power being drawn by the fan and control the gas solenoid valve accordingly. If either at start-up, or during the course of the operation, the fans fail, are turned off or are running to low the gas solenoid valve will automatically close.

BS6173:2009 and pressure proving

Another aspect of BS6173:2009 is gas pressure proving. The standard states if any of the catering equipment does not have a flame failure device, a gas pressure proving system should be installed. A gas pressure proving system will check for any leaks on the pipework or on the appliances at start-up, in the event where a gas leak is detected then this will not allow the gas solenoid valve to open.

The majority of appliances which have been built within the last 10 years should have flame failure devices fitted, however in a kitchen where every appliance does have flame failure devices fitted then gas proving is often still recommended to carry out a gas check on the line and ensure the safety of kitchen staff in the area.

Product designer

Meet our Product Designer

By S&S Northern

Ever wondered how our products go from an idea to a reality? Luckily, we design and manufacture all of our products on site, and have sat down with our Head of Design, Dariusz, to ask him some of your questions:

How long have you worked with S&S Northern?  I have worked with S&S Northern since 2004, so for 14 years.

What is a fun fact about you?  Something that not many people know about me is that I used to play professional handball for Poland.

How many products have you designed for S&S Northern? I have designed 56 products in total for S&S Northern – this number shocked me too!

What is your favourite thing about product design?  Definitely the challenge, I love problem solving and product design is like doing a puzzle.

Which S&S Northern panel are you most proud of? I am most proud of the CT1750 because it is one of the most complicated.

How long does it take to design a panel? On average, it takes around a month to design one product.

What is your design process? My design process starts with research in order to find out if what I want to do is possible, then once I know what to do I put everything together and test my theory. If it does not work I go back and correct it, if it does work I pass it on for manufacturing here on site.

What is the most challenging thing about designing products? The most challenging thing is keeping up with evolving technologies. It is so important to be up to date so we always stay ahead of our competition in this industry.

If you could have designed anything that exists today what would it be and why? This is a hard one! However, as I love coffee so much I would love to have designed a fancy coffee machine.

Smoking barbecue causes Carbon Monoxide poisoning at Gordon Ramsay Restaurant

By Industry News, Latest News, S&S Northern

Two people, believed to be staff members, at the chef’s London House brasserie had to be assessed for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning and adjoining flats were evacuated after a carbon monoxide alarm was activated.

Two fire engines and an ambulance were called to the scene, in Battersea, South-West London. Dr Deborah Turbitt from Public Health England warned of the dangers posed by burning charcoal.
‘It is extremely dangerous to have a lit or smoldering barbecue indoors or in an enclosed space. This is because barbecues emit carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that you can’t taste, smell or see.’

This potentially life threatening incident could have been prevented by using one of our Carbon Monoxide Detectors, which will provide an audible and visual alarm if the levels rise to a dangerous level. Our Carbon Monoxide detectors will also close the gas solenoid valve preventing further use of gas in the building until the levels reach a safe level, therefore avoiding any additional safety hazards. When using our CT1750 with a Carbon Monoxide or CO2 detector, this has the facility  to automatically increase the speed of the fans if dangerous levels are detected, even if the panel is switched to the off position. For a full range of our gas safety systems please contact S&S Northern direct or visit our website https://snsnorthern.com/

The Only Way is Essex

By S&S Northern

S&S Northern was established in 1995 in Chorley, Lancashire. The aim of S&S Northern was simple! To design and build quality gas safety products, matched with outstanding customer service and back up. Following 10 years of successful growth, we then opened our South East branch based in Southend on Sea, Essex in 2005 to meet the increased demand in the South East and London.

“Our vision was not to be a local company, but a national company. We know our customer service is what separates us from our competitor. Opening an Essex branch was pivotal to our growth and maintaining our exceptional customer service,” said Managing Director Steve McMahon.

James Lloyd and Alex Lloyd opened the office in April 2005 and still manage the branch today. They now employ an additional five staff members. Kate Lloyd (Admin) Margret Lloyd (Accounts) Dariusz Kamieniak (Technical) Dan Cahill (Sales) and David Wenn (Sales)

“Over recent years our growth has been incredible” Manager James Lloyd “Our commitment to provide a great service to all customers from consultant level to installations engineers has been the catalyst to our success”.

Manager Alex Lloyd “We feel nobody in our market can offer the same level of service, quality products and innovative features. We are grateful to all of our customers, without them we would not have the nationwide success we have today.”

The S&S Northern team now has coverage in Northern and Southern England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
